Career Change at 52

While it’s true that a career change at 52 may appear more daunting than at 50, it’s important to recognize that age should not be the sole determining factor. When considering a career change at any age, there are unique challenges and considerations involved. Here are some factors that might contribute to your perception of increased difficulty at 52 and how to approach them:

Consider why you are making this change

The factors behind the decision, or need, to make a career change at 52 will also play a large role in how you feel about this transitional time. If you have made the decision for yourself it is not easy but may be easier. However, if this has been forced upon you by circumstances outside of you control it may be something you had not planned on or foreseen. In these instances you might well feel more resistance and anger at the need to move on which can make everything more difficult.

I am focusing this article on the issues  that are thrown up when you have not chosen to change careers but are forced to do so.

Professional Experience:

By the age of 52, you will usually have accumulated a wealth of experience and skills in your current and associated fields. Transitioning to a completely new career might require starting from scratch and picking up new knowledge and expertise. However, it’s crucial to identify the transferable skills from your previous experience that can be valuable in your new career path.

It is quite common to feel that you are now considered too old, but some companies really do recognise the longevity of experience and are encouraging people to plan for much longer working careers (see Forbes Article)

Financial considerations:

Any career change can raise concerns about financial stability, but it is probably exacerbated in later life,  especially when considering potential salary changes or investment in additional education or training. After all you may have a much shorter period to recoup the cost.

Thorough financial planning and exploring various options, such as part-time work or online courses, can help mitigate these concerns.

Emotional readiness:

Changing careers can be emotionally challenging, as it often involves stepping out of your comfort zone, adapting to new work environments, and facing uncertainty. At 52, you may have developed strong attachments to both  your current career  and also your ‘personal brand’ so you may feel quite resistant to change.

However, it’s important to assess personal fulfilment and long-term goals to determine if a career change is the right step for personal and professional growth.

Networking and job search:

Building a professional network and finding job opportunities can be more difficult at an older age, as younger professionals may be more actively engaged in the job market and have established connections. However, leveraging existing networks, attending industry events, and utilizing online platforms can help expand your professional contacts and increase the chances of finding suitable opportunities.

Lifelong learning:

Embracing continuous learning is crucial when changing careers, regardless of age. It’s important to identify the skills and knowledge required in the new field and invest time and effort in acquiring them. Taking courses, attending workshops, or pursuing certifications can demonstrate commitment and adaptability to potential employers.

Despite the perceived challenges, there are also advantages to making a career change at 52. Mature professionals often possess a wealth of life experience, strong work ethic, emotional intelligence, and a robust professional network that can be advantageous in a new career. Additionally, many employers value diverse backgrounds and perspectives, which can work in your favour.

Ultimately, the decision to change careers at any age is deeply personal. It’s essential to evaluate your motivations, assess the potential challenges and rewards, and make an informed choice that aligns with your long-term goals and aspirations. With proper planning, perseverance, and a positive mindset, a successful career change is achievable at any age.
