I absolutely love the concept of the wheel of life as a tool for life change, but I want to encourage you to design your own wheel of life rather than be constrained by the ideas of others.
For any self awareness improvement exercises to be effective you absolutely must identify with the content. A workshop I was attending was completely ruined for me because I was forced to explore something that was not relevant to me at all.
Have a read of the Love your Life in 2024 article to help set the right categories for yourself.
So, make sure you create the content that will be really meaningful for you rather than using words from other people.
What is a Wheel of Life?
It is, in effect, a pie chart with each slice being one of the important elements in your life i.e. family, significant other, career etc.
Once you have identified all the different criteria or categories – sometimes I refer this to the different ‘hats’ you feel you wear, or want to wear – the fabulous work can start.
The typical choices you have
Friends : Family : Significant Other : Social Life : Career : Finances : Holidays/Travel: Personal Development : Attitude : Spiritual Growth
I strongly urge you to spend as much time as you need to identify the criteria that are part of your life – and change the wording to suit you. Typically you will have 8 – 12 different elements to make sure you don’t miss out any important areas. This will mean that when you come to decide on the changes you want to make, you can ensure it is congruent throughout your life.
Please don’t be tempted to miss out areas of your life that are causing hurt or dissatisfaction – these are the most important ones to include!
What to do
Draw or download a circle that is separated into equal segments (the same number or segments as the criteria you have identified). Next you should label each pie slice according to your choices above.
To help you Design Your Own Wheel of Life – you can download and print off a basic 12 segmented wheel of life .
Spend time sitting quietly with each heading to decide on a scale of 1-10 (1 being low and 10 amazing) how satisfied you are with that aspect of your life.
For each category jot down the positives and negatives that have lead to you giving the score above.
Now the fun part
With the objective of increasing your level of life satisfaction in each category. The ideal is that you get everything to a fairly even number so your wheel will give you a smooth ride, but we have to be realistic and it may be easier to effect improvement in one area as opposed to another.
Write down what would need to change in each category for you to give it a higher score.
Prioritise your thoughts so you can see some quick wins as well as some challenges.
Finally, set your goals to make sure you are more likely to Love your Life in 2024.
